panel now. dana mill bank, political cl columnist, michael crowley, and here in new york ron christie. dana, if i might start with you. an insightful political observer such as yourself has seen these two gentlemen in many a debate. but if your path to success relies on mitt romney's comic timing, isn't the zinger likely to become something of a boomerang and hit mr. romney instead of his opponent? >> you know, everybody always remembers the great zingers. you know, usually something from ronald reagan, but here we go again expecting that people are going to try a little bit too hard. there's a real danger when you've been supplied with premixed, ready-made zingers to insert into the debate that mitt romney will insert them at the wrong time or say them not quite right. the only thing worse than having no zinger is having a zinger that comes off badly and comes back to bite you. so i think that's a perilous way to go, but i'll be there in denver, and i look forward to the attempts because it will make it far more interesting. >> indeed. we're delighted, ron, that you're here. you have

halperin. i want be to start with dana. i love your attitude. any way, what's your first way of looking at this? how do you know who is winning? >> well, i'm watching it in the filing center. i'm going to do a grown and laugh index. if you're growning when the guy is talking, he's losing. if you're laughing, that's better. you can do that for yourself at home. if you're cringing, the guy is not winning. romney has set this up in terms of zingers. >> why does it get out that he couldn't sleep last night? everything seems to leak out of this campaign. is he landing the zingers or do they boomerang next to him? ultimately, is he able to land a serious blow. if we're debating this on points needs to open this -- >> if you're jim lehrer, do you have the right or protocol to say to a guy who has delivered an manicured polished up thing you've been working on for three weeks to say, can we limit ourselves to a spontaneous conversation here? can you actually say that? or will the audience spot it and say, that's a prefab job that his guys thought up two weeks ago and he's reciting like a parrot

wednesday night in denver. kate baldwin is here and dana bash and first correspondent jessica yellin. how's the president, jessica, preparing for this big night 48 hours or so from now? >> wolf, he's flown out to henderson, nevada, where he's mostly hunkered down. he's out there some of his top strategists for three days of intensive debate prep. i caught up with senator john kerry. he's the man who's playing mitt romney in the mock debates and he helped explain why the president had to leave washington, d.c. to get ready for wednesday's rumble. >> well, the president's the president. he was at the u.n. giving two major speeches. he's been dealing with all sorts of international business, domestic business. he is at the white house a lot of the time preparing and i can tell you that his -- they have had to cancel times when he might or might not have been able to do preparation. it's my understanding mitt romney spent four or five days secluded somewhere. had five debates in 24 hours or 48 hours. and has senator portman with him every day on the airplane practicing. i'm here. i'm not trav

this week is our senior congressional correspondent dana bash. our guide to all these key, you know, senate races, and dana, i know today, you want to focus on the two senate races cause something surprising problems for both parties and that they have to defend turf they didn't expect to have to defend. talk to me about indiana first. >> that's right. that's a great example for republicans. it was a republican senate seat, has been held by richard lugar for decades. he is a moderate. and a tea party backed republican candidate, as he's mentioned, richard murdoch, won the republican primary and democrats have been pounding him as too conservative for the state, which is used to having senators from both parties who tend to work across party lines. he's running against a moderate democratic congressman who was really playing up his centrist credentials. and so this is a red state, but democrats really think they have an in because of their candidate. i want you to look at the two ads run by both campaigns, fascinating and telling because they're both using the same argument, even the same im

have been holed up for days now to practice. dana bash has been working her sources. you've been hearing in terms of the romney debate preparations, they've gotten intense. >> they have. in fact, i was told they had their high volta mock debate prep sessions until just two days ago. for the past couple of days, they took it down several notches. it was all about fine tuning in a more relaxed setting in romney's hotel room. romney's so tag, tweeted a picture of what he called the brain trust meeting. a source tells us they worked hard on trimming his answers on critical issues so he would come through with a quote, single sentence to capture something important. cnn has learned that mitt romney's mock debate sessions are two and a half hours long. an hour more than the actual debate will last. the reason, romney sources say debate prep is so intense, his aides carve out breaks for him to decompress with his family. moderator jim lehrer is with long time adviser, peter flaherty. at the opposing podium, president obama is played by rob portman, who spoke exclusively to cnn. >> you h
